Foto 3D CX from Strata takes multiple photographs taken by digital cameras, and then turns them into fully textured 3D models. It appears that you print out an alignment mat, place the object on top, and then take photos, rotating the model by hand between each photos.
(For objects too large for the mat, Foto 3D lets you apply feature pins.)
Foto 3D generates a 3D polygon model, which you can modify. Clipping planes let you slice off portions, such as the base.
This page has a flash animation that illustrates what I've been writing about: www.strata.com/products/strata_3d_cx_suite/strata_foto_3d_cx/
