UGS: We Heart Linux

With the release of NX 4 on Linux, UGS says they are the first to provide a complete set of PLM software for Linux. TeamCenter becomes available later this year on Linux. And they also run on 64-bit CPUs from AMD and Intel.

Now here's the interesting part. UGS says: Linux and x64 are two of the technologies most requested by UGS customers. What a contrast with Autodesk saying their AutoCAD customers aren't asking for Linux.

The old definition of high-end CAD was (1) it is expensive; and (2) it runs on Unix. Perhaps the new definition will be (1) it runs on Linux; and (2) it runs on 64-bit CPUs.

AutoCAD originally ran on UNIX as well...

Considering that Autodesks customer base is on Windows, there probably aren't a lot of them asking for a Linux version.

UG, on the other hand, started on Unix hence the Linux version would be asked for more often by it's user base. And since Unix and Linux are the same for the most part, a conversion to Linux was probably rather painless to deliver.
